The Cardinal and the Evergreen
Christmas Tree became home to many Backyard Birds
(the start of a Children’s Book)
O n a cold and windy day in January, along the banks of Breton Bay, a male Cardinal, so bright against the stark and bleak background, takes shelter by tucking in a bit into my Mom’s evergreen! That little tree has quite a history!
Years before, that little Evergreen tree had been my parents’ Christmas tree in their relatively new “retirement” home, built in Leonardtown, Maryland along the banks of Breton Bay. The Christmas Tree was not only a living tree, it was complete with its root ball in a wooden basket.
A fter the holiday decorations were removed, at the request of my Mom, Dad took the tree — basket, root ball and all — into the backyard, placing it outside the kitchen window so Mom could attract the birds and enjoy the magnificent view, with birds in the foreground and the Bay as backdrop.
